Photodump time! Who likes potatoes?

This is a Chrysler 41TE, which came out of a 3.8 liter Town & Caravan. Let’s take a peek inside! There are a lot of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! here, but don’t worry; I won’t cram it all into one post.

Man, these FWD units sure are compact

That box below the cooler nipples is the solenoid pack. All together in one block for easy swaps without having to pull the pan. No matter; we’re gutting this thing down to the bone anyway.

Solenoid pack and sensors off

Front pump out (also to be removed: that little cooler bypass valve near the upper-right corner of where the pump was, where you see some ATF pooling)

Ok, let’s take a break here. (I hate working on the floor.) Next, we’ll get the case mounted up onto a stand and get some light on the subject so that we can see down in there a little better.

Haha that brings back old memories! The auto trans course I took involved tearing down and rebuilding one of these.

This isn’t my first auto rebuild, but it is my first FWD one. For a brief moment, I thought that maybe I could just rebuild the transmission portion, and not have to deal with the geartrain. WRONG

At the first Chrysler dealer I worked at in the early 2000's, there were guys who would have the trans out and disassembled by lunch, and have it back together, in the car and on the road before quitting time.

Because so many of them failed they got REEL GUD at rebuilding them.

Holy shit. Full rebuilds or just going in deep enough to (what, replace a broken snap ring?)

Full rebuilds with kits. Clutches and snap rings and other parts I forget the name of because its been so long.... nowadays with the 6 8 and 9 speeds we just replace. Oh, and the CVTs. Always replace the CVTs.
